Hey man, I know you like the new navbar, but the module padding is way too much. It was fine the way it was before, even if it was small. There is so much wasted space on the new one. My desktop is not a cell phone, the buttons don't need to be massive. And it looks horrible on mobile. It's also inconsistent with the secondary Nav which keeps the smaller left and right boundaries.

Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 12:44 PM
nah I don't really like much of the new navbar
it's a temporary measure before we move on to the next phase
Avatar
bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 12:45 PM
Ah okay, I understand. That makes sense
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 12:45 PM
there were some emergency bug fixes to be made so we made as many changes to make it useable
for eg. those links in the menu are all single-column atm because something broke in the responsiveness

bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 12:46 PM
Ah
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 12:50 PM
anyhow, which link paddings are looking huger?
the primary nav height itself has not changed, it's always been 60px - so I am thinking some change happened in the sideways padding (most likely the game icons)
Avatar
bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 12:58 PM
Yep, gimme a sec
It looks better now... the new modules look normal with the new padding, but the old modules with the new padding was the problem.
Speaking of which, I'm not a fan of the new nav at all. it feels less customizable with no benefit (edited)
The primary nav has no organization options, and the games module that's featured in the primary nav shows no information whatsoever nor does it have any pop-out panel to navigate through (edited)

Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:01 PM
yeah tom wants to go for simplicity and wants more control over the primary nav
so GB having more control over the nav means users get less control over it
Avatar
bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 01:02 PM
That... genuinely sucks in every way
i can't think of a single positive
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:02 PM
Hmm, that's because you are a user
there are many positives for GB the website

Avatar

couldn't that be a default module?
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:03 PM
the old header had many GB affiliate sites in the past - Genr8rs, a separate contest website
Avatar bonkmaykr

spacing issues as well as users removing it onto the sidenav
site logos tend to be wider

The new Sections tab isn't organized whatsoever, and the old one isn't accessible anymore

Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:04 PM
that's what I already mentioned above lol

The ones that are not accessible are pages that are going to get removed
like /mods
that page is getting removed
it's one of the first parts of a change where the site will be more community-oriented
Avatar
bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 01:08 PM
Okay, here's the way I see it. The nav bars should be reserved exclusively for things the user accesses frequently. Thus, things like having the latest site update on the primary navbar at all times is an obnoxious use of space. And the way it's organized should be entirely subjective. A lot of people don't like their sections button locked to the right top corner, some people probably do. I don't, i'm right handed and prefer my navigation on the left hand side. The new primary nav modules are not expressive of the user's needs, nor do they provide quick access to essential and useful information that was there previously. That's an objective downgrade from before and should have been worked out with users via a poll or blog question before being rolled out.
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:09 PM
Hmm, we were gonna remove the sections button itself
basically that site map is going to get reorganized a bit more
Also, that's just a freedom that GB gave you which you will not find on any other major website (edited)

bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 01:10 PM
The new sections pane also lacks a quick "Add Mod" shortcut, meaning you have to take more steps to upload things, and it does not use existing CSS selectors or variables for backwards compatibility reasons. It complicates uberstyles by giving us another thing to worry about separate from SecondaryNav modules and panes/articles

that's on me because tom's older HTML was too long
Avatar

Considering that one of the major concerns as of late was accessibility for new users, this is a step backward
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:11 PM
Actually there has to be a balance - giving everything customizable just leads to a slew of more bugs to fix
Avatar Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt
that's on me because tom's older HTML was too long
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:11 PM
and had lots of unnecessary divs - smaller DOM, better rendering and better performance
There is going to be a lot of DOM chopping from here on forth - uberstyles are gonna break and I am not at all going to be apologetic about it
I can't have one user complaining about both performance issues and uberstyle breakage at the same time (not you, other users) (edited)
Anyways there is no way that you change the fundamental HTML structure and make it backwards compatible
tom's older CSS selectors are SCSS nested - hence long than necessary
the nesting gives maintainable code but not performant CSS (edited)
Avatar
bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 01:18 PM
At this point i'm considering creating a module that reverts structure for profiles with old ubers that need it
just for maitenance sake
because i know i can't really do anything

Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:19 PM
uberstyles - that is going to be something the entire site is going to have to bear - the ability to customize is a privilege (edited)
Avatar
bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 01:19 PM
While we're on the subject however, it would be nice if layout changes were announced ahead of time like they have been in the past, e.g. with module > h3 being changed.
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:19 PM
hmm, it will get announced in the announcement blog
the structure is never stable hence announcing it ahead of time is pointless
the only thing I'd announce right now is how to recustomize the GB logo again
the rest of the nav is going to change again
Avatar
bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 01:20 PM
If you announce layout changes a week in advance then uberstylists can prepare updates for when it rolls out

Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:20 PM
sure, don't blame me when it changes within the next week
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:28 PM
I have been on the receiving end of uberstyle changes BTW (been updating ubers since 2013 -.-)
that's something I just accept - the site needs to move forward with development work and changing the site just means things will break
Avatar

well this is gone, so i cant set the new nav style back to fixed or else it breaks (goes off-screen). which means that i'm permanently stuck with a janky uberstyle where the navbar changes position based on the scroll position, for some reason

No, the opposite
scrolling with the screen, stuck at the top at all times at a fixed position
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:32 PM

uhm so can you show a gif or video of the issue you are facing?
did not get it
Avatar
bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 01:33 PM
it is set to sticky now, so it only stays fixed when it's at its minimum distance from the edge (top:0;)
for ubers with navbars that stick out slightly, this ruins them
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:33 PM
yeah, so uhm change the CSS?
all you need to do is set it back to fixed if you want that
Avatar
bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 01:35 PM
setting to fixed does this.
Because the width is forced at 100%. When an element is fixed, it perceives the parent element's dimensions as whatever the page size is.
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:35 PM
you want flexible width to go with that right?

Avatar Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt

Avatar
bonkmaykr 15-Nov-21 01:38 PM
No, the inline CSS which sets the nav to it's appropriate size was done via the NavOptions. The code for that is no longer there, there is no fixed width set and the nav options no longer affect the nav bar. There is no way to fix this with CSS alone to my knowledge unless the nav itself is reverted
If I were to force this myself then it would not respect the user preferences either and would make the problem worse
Avatar
Ring-A-Ding Rampage / ParaBolt 15-Nov-21 01:39 PM
ahh ok, you meant the site width preference code, there was another resize event code which I thought you were referring to

Avatar

nope, we ain't Steam Labs unfortunately
or Reddit which had a dedicated team to maintain the old reddit site
those who did not want the new site did not opt in to it at all
that's because it added new features and had incomplete old ones
and had bugs, tons of them - but reddit has had bugs since the beginning, it took years to fix those on the old one, and same will happen with the new one one day
will keep getting developed upon and improved

These updates, most of which are unfinished and are initially downgrades on release, are being forced onto us with no option to opt out and no vote on whether they should be rolled out or not, and are being released in a broken state. You responded by telling me that Gamebanana is not one of those, and provided me an example of how things could and should have been, with Reddit in particular -- simply having the old system being moved somewhere else where users could opt-in to it. I payed full attention to that. What you did not tell me are the "bugs" that you speak of, which were from what I understand the reason that the nav was overhauled to begin with.
If you're going to waste our time blaming me for simply wanting to know something, then I no longer wish to speak to you. And by the way, your tone was rather iffy several times. I might as well just do this myself at this point.

Hm, let's see, assuming that I am going to get angry, and at you specifically, when expected layout changes arrive? Completely missing the entire point that confusion and conflict was precisely what I was trying to avoid with the suggestion that users should be warned and have their feedback heard ahead of time instead of afterward. I never said I was blaming you for any of this, only that the development team as a whole should make a greater effort to not throw unexpected roadblocks at users.

I mentioned why that was not possible
I did say that nav is again going to change within a few days time

There was no public announcement issued, nor any built-in detail on what the changes would be. (edited)

Because tom works on those after the updates, coding comes first. Since you expect me to understand how you want your answers, I'd expect you to understand that.

That could be solved by just having the changes on an opt-in testing branch first before rolling them out.

Been a pattern ever since the beginning of my collab with tom, Mini made the initial updates after the changes have been deployed.
You are putting a good deal of emphasis on pre-warning ahead of time when I already pointed out that it is not a finalized product

again told you about that.
No time, no resources
Resources = servers, people to manage and maintain the branches. There's just the two of us, part time.

That was the beginning of the comparision with reddit
But yeah, let's stick to "bugs", "old design"
You made me answer your same questions, twice.
If you did not understand an answer, could have just asked "What do you mean by this?"

or Reddit which had a dedicated team to maintain the old reddit site
